We Have a Home

Great News! Mike Smieja has secured Eastside Neighborhood Services, not only as a venue for our December 14th event, but also use of their kitchen facilities and two kilns. Good to be indoors considering it'll be nearly Christmas in Minnesota- or who knows given this year's erratic weather. From ESNS's website: "Organized in 1915, East Side Neighborhood Services, Inc. (ESNS) is a nonprofit human service agency that provides social and other services to individuals, families and neighborhoods primarily of Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis and surrounding communities.  Its purpose is to assist people of all ages and backgrounds in realizing a higher quality of life." Edison High's 7th Annual Community/School BBQ, 8.22.13

Edison High is having its 7th annual community/school bbg this Thursday, Aug. 22. "Join us at our 7th annual open house and community/school BBQ. You will be one of the first to see the changes that are taking place on Edison’s campus. The first phase of the Mississippi Watershed project has started and our parking lot is in the process of being renovated. This year, the community BBQ will be taking place in the streets next to Edison High School. The inside of Edison is also getting a new look. We will also be unveiling a Thomas Edison High School signature mural. Once again there will be a fire truck and food prepared and provided by local restaurants and community members. Edison’s Green Council is bringing back the bike blender…get ready to pedal and create yummy smoothies. New this year will be the Minneapolis Public School’s food truck and a photo booth. This is a FREE family fun event. Of course there will be plenty of delicious food provided by local restaurants and community members. We look forward to seeing you!" (Empty Bowls NE may soon have some wonderful things to announce re: Edison's fully engaged, community-minded departments. Stay tuned.) T.W.

Our target date is Saturday, December 14th 2013. At first I'd thought that trying to pull this together between Thanksgiving and Christmas was crazy, but am coming around to letting crazy work for us. 12.14.13 it is.

Welcome.

All hairbrained ideas have to begin somewhere, and ours began August 11th on 29th and Johnson at the Coffee Shop Northeast. What we may have lacked in teeming masses was more than made up for in energetic dialogue and constructive suggestions. We shuttlecocked possible venues, fiscal agency, "empty jardiniere" thoughts, letting kids glaze greenware pots, and much more. I was surprised to hear from Mike Ziomko, founder of the Powderhorn Empty Bowls Project, that we might even be more ahead of the game than they were seven years ago at their inception (and if so, only thanks in great part to Mike's generous help). Now we welcome your ideas, wisdom, and hopes here. No contribution is too far-fetched, or too small. T.W.
